Marc Forgette

Marc Forgette is of French and Algonquin Descent and is a member of the Wahgoshig First Nation Band in Matheson Ontario. He makes his home in Ottawa. He grew up learning about his culture but was never greatly exposed to it. Wahgoshig means “Little Fox” in Anishinaabemowin and is located on the shores of Lake Abitibi in Northern Ontario.

His great-grandfather was a fur trapper for the Hudson Bay Company and was known as a blazing pioneer back in his day.

Makatew roughly translates to “Black” in Anishinaabemowin and was the last name of his great-great-grandmother.

Makatew Workshops - Medicine Bag Workshop

Learn how to create a traditional Medicine Bag in this fascinating workshop, where Marc will share stories about the origins of the materials and the cultural significance of the bag. Discover how non-Indigenous allies can support Indigenous artisans, entrepreneurs and knowledge-keepers by taking some thoughtful yet simple steps to appreciate, rather than appropriate, Indigenous culture.

Materials include 2 pieces of locally sourced white tail deer leather, leather lace, needle and artificial sinew. The leather will also include a hand beaded design. The medicine bag kit will be shipped to participants in advance of the event.

A $40.00 pre-registration fee will apply.
